Educators and staff

‘Schools in the World’ is an international programme that promotes an avantgarde pedagogic training with the aim of contributing to the physical and psychic wellbeing of the project’s beneficiaries and in that way, achieving what Giovenale hoped for: “a healthy mind in a healthy body”.

Area of intervention

Country: Brazil
Region: Rio de Janeiro
Metropolitan area: Maca

Active in the country since 2013
Current project: January 2020 – December 2021

Present in the country since

January 2005

Brazil has approx. 206 million inhabitants,
of which 7.4% of the population live under the national threshold of poverty and another 6%, approx. 11 million people live in favelas. Life in the streets for these children is often marked by violence, substance abuse and sexual abuse. The present intervention takes place in the biggest favelas of the city of Macaé, located just outside of Rio de Janeiro.

The socio-cultural context is severely degraded, with countless street children, unaccompanied minors, of which the majority are illiterate and without professional qualification. In this situation of poverty the only way out is criminality, which provides easy money.

  1. Offer an alternative to the world of drug dealing, and thus a safe place for children, offering them a solid support of individual education.
  2. Organize recreational and sports activities that improve the beneficiaries’ soft skills such as discipline, self-esteem, flexibility, etc.
  3. Offer all beneficiaries at the POSCRIS center a complete meal a day.
  4. Increase the effectiveness of the educational intervention by the local staff by updating and improving their practical and pedagogical knowledge.

Educational component:

  • Realization of an after-school programme (literary and math skills);
  • Distribution of educational material;
  • Moments of group reading in the library;
  • Monthly sessions on the problems of drugs and criminality;

Socialization component:

  • Socialization and recreational activities (dance, music and creativity);
  • Sports activities;
  • Cultural activities (museums, films, various types of artistic performances).

Nutritional component:

  • Provision of 1 meal a day for all beneficiaries and for the duration of the entire school year.

Training component:

  • A cycle of training and continuous education seminars to offer avantgarde pedagogical practices to the PROSCRIS educators.

Expected results

The project beneficiaries have distanced themselves from the drug market and have improved their educational performance.

Through recreational, artistic and sports activities all participants of the POSCRIS center have improved their skills across-the-board.

Tutti i beneficiari hanno ricevuto almeno un pasto completo al giorno.

The effectiveness of the educational intervention by the POSCRIS personnel has increased through the refresher and improvement of their knowledge and pedagogical practices.
