‘Schools in the World’ is an international programme that promotes an avantgarde pedagogic training with the aim of contributing to the physical and psychic wellbeing of the project’s beneficiaries and in that way, achieving what Giovenale hoped for: “a healthy mind in a healthy body”.
Brazil has approx. 206 million inhabitants,
of which 7.4% of the population live under the national threshold of poverty and another 6%, approx. 11 million people live in favelas. Life in the streets for these children is often marked by violence, substance abuse and sexual abuse. The present intervention takes place in the biggest favelas of the city of Macaé, located just outside of Rio de Janeiro.
The socio-cultural context is severely degraded, with countless street children, unaccompanied minors, of which the majority are illiterate and without professional qualification. In this situation of poverty the only way out is criminality, which provides easy money.
The project beneficiaries have distanced themselves from the drug market and have improved their educational performance.
Through recreational, artistic and sports activities all participants of the POSCRIS center have improved their skills across-the-board.
The effectiveness of the educational intervention by the POSCRIS personnel has increased through the refresher and improvement of their knowledge and pedagogical practices.
