I.C.O.N.S. – Fifth Edition

Global Health Through the PHASE Perspective

The fifth edition of I.C.O.N.S. — the International Conference on the Neurophysiology of Silence — marks a significant milestone in an internationally acclaimed scientific and cultural journey dedicated to exploring silence as a transformative frontier in neuroscience, human development, and global health. Building on the success and impact of previous editions, I.C.O.N.S. has led to the publication of three books in Progress in Brain Research series and a major international Research Topic that have inspired dozens of peer-reviewed studies, scientific papers, and collaborations across neuroscience, psychology, education, contemplative sciences, and human development. I.C.O.N.S. has helped in establishing the neurophysiology of silence as an emerging and influential interdisciplinary field of scientific inquiry.

Bringing together internationally renowned philosophers, scientists, artists, economists, and global health experts, I.C.O.N.S. 2026 expands the dialogue on silence through the PHASE framework — Philosophy, Health, Art, Science, and Economy.
The conference explores the profound effects of silence on neuroplasticity, emotional regulation, cognition, creativity, sleep, and social wellbeing, while also addressing its implications for sustainable development and collective human flourishing. Through scientific presentations, philosophical reflections, artistic performances, and experiential practices, I.C.O.N.S. offers a unique interdisciplinary platform where scientific research and lived human experience converge.

Particular attention is dedicated to the relationship between silence and global health, positioning silence as a measurable, transformative, and urgently needed resource for resilience, mental wellbeing, and social cohesion in an increasingly overstimulated and fragmented world. The conference further investigates the role of harmony, presence, and contemplative awareness in shaping innovative models of education, economy, and societal development. By integrating cutting-edge neuroscience with philosophy, art, and humanistic inquiry, I.C.O.N.S. continues to advance an international movement dedicated to understanding silence both as a scientific phenomenon and as a profound dimension of human consciousness and collective evolution.

Organized by Fondazione Patrizio Paoletti and its Research Institute for Neuroscience, Education and Didactics (RINED), I.C.O.N.S. stands today among the leading global platforms devoted to the neurophysiology and transformative potential of silence.

SPEAKERS

Patrizio Paoletti

Patrizio Paoletti

Research Institute of Neuroscience, Education and Didactics (RINED), Assisi, Italy; Ipazia Higher Education Institute, Malta

Patrizio Paoletti is the founder of the Research Institute for Neuroscience, Education and Didactics and the Patrizio Paoletti Foundation for Development and Communication. Paoletti developed the Sphere Model of Consciousness, which has recently been considered the most advanced and elegant neuro-phenomenological model for consciousness. His research interests include the investigation of ‘consciousness-in-itself’, self-awareness and its neurophysiological correlates; sensorimotor paradigms aimed at the development of attention and willpower capacities and their educational applications. Paoletti has created several techniques aimed at enhancing brain functions, including Quadrato Motor Training, a motor training technique that has proven beneficial in developmental disorders and neurodegenerative states. In the educational field, through his numerous teaching projects, Paoletti promotes a global approach to human development in terms of bodily experience, emotion regulation, and the enhancement of attention and self-awareness. The neuroscientific investigation of Paoletti and his Foundation aims at providing scientifically validated educational tools, addressed to different age groups ranging from children to adults, as well as to educational professionals and non-specialised audiences. The Patrizio Paoletti Foundation’s vision takes the form of education for Peace and Awareness as indispensable values for the future of mankind.

Tal Dotan Ben-Soussan

Tal Dotan Ben-Soussan

Research Institute of Neuroscience, Education and Didactics (RINED), Assisi, Italy; Ipazia Higher Education Institute, Malta

Tal Dotan Ben-Soussan, Ph.D., is the director of the Research Institute for Neuroscience, Education and Didactics (RINED) – Patrizio Paoletti Foundation. Ben-Soussan leads international studies on training and neuroplasticity from neurophysiological and psychobiological perspectives. As a neuroscientist and bio-psychologist, she has published numerous articles on the importance of movement and meditation for improving cognitive and emotional wellbeing. Her pioneering work on the Quadrato Motor Training had led to a significant understanding of the underlying neuronal and biological mechanisms mediating cognitive improvement following movement meditation, for healthy development and aging. Ben-Soussan is fascinated by the topic of consciousness, enhancing cognitive functions and their electrophysiological and molecular correlates. She has dedicated over 20 years to understanding the mechanisms of wellbeing in children and adults and applying them in different settings including schools, hospitals and the workplace. Ben-Soussan is part of the leading think tank of the School Mental Health International Leadership Exchange (SMHILE). Her recent review on the electrophysiological correlates of different states of the self, in relation to different types of meditation and higher states of consciousness, emphasizes the importance of movement for accessing the embodied-self anchored in the here and now, while non-dual practices of transcending the self, allow a greater state of empathy and connection with the other, such as the Quadrato Motor Training and OMM One Minute Mediation, by Patrizio Paoletti. She acts as an editor and reviewer in several renowned journals and coordinates international conferences integrating theoretical, methodological and practical approaches on various topics, such as neuroplasticity, training and neuro-education. She has edited 3 books on the topic of silence in Frontiers in Psychology and Progress in Brain Research.

Patrizio Paoletti Foundation

25 anni of dedicated commitment

Fondazione Patrizio Paoletti has been active for 25 years in researching and promoting global health for the well-being of both the individual and the community, investing in neuropsychopedagogical and educational research on intentional silence, as well as in implementation protocols for schools, families and local communities. Its web portal for scientific outreach and self-education on healthy lifestyles offers new content every day to spread awareness about the benefits of silence, including downloadable EduKits and petitions to introduce meditation into schools. At Fondazione Patrizio Paoletti’s Assisi International School, silence is valued to foster well-being and the development of creativity, which can be cultivated through meditative practices such as Quadrato Motor Training and the OMM One Minute Meditation method, both conceived by Patrizio Paoletti. The Prefigurare il Futuro protocol by Fondazione Patrizio Paoletti, dedicated to Italian high schools, utilizes the practice of silence as a psychoeducational tool to enhance awareness and resilience in adolescents. Fondazione Patrizio Paoletti inspired and provided its scientific and pedagogical contribution to the draft law establishing the National Day of Silence, to be celebrated on September 17th, presented at the Press Room of the Chamber of Deputies by Hon. Giorgio Mulè, with the aim of promoting silence as an educational, spiritual, cultural, and global health resource.
