Oltre l’orizzonte dell’incertezza

Beyond the Horizon of Uncertainty: How Can We Face the Fear of Tomorrow?

Living with Confidence and Awareness

The human being possesses an innate aversion to emptiness and unpredictability, an evolutionary trait that once protected us from predators but now clashes with the complexity of modern life. In an era defined by “polycrisis,” uncertainty is no longer a sporadic event but the constant background noise of our existence—a persistent vibration that tests our emotional resilience. Our biological architecture is programmed to seek security, creating a continual paradox between our need for control and the fluid nature of reality around us. Confronting the fear of tomorrow therefore requires far more than passive endurance; it demands a deep understanding of how our minds and bodies respond to signals of invisible threat, enabling us to transform the paralyzing anticipation of the worst into a state of alert, flexible, and ultimately active presence in the present moment.

Global Uncertainty and Its Reflection in the Italian Landscape

At the global level, data published by the World Health Organization (WHO) between 2024 and 2025 paint a picture in which instability has become systemic. More than one billion people are affected by mental health disorders, with anxiety disorders impacting 4.4% of the world’s population. This trend is fueled by concerns over economic prospects, geopolitical conflicts, and the transformative impact of emerging technologies.

This global scenario finds a particularly strong and specific echo in Italy, where the latest Mental Health Report highlights that more than 845,000 people are receiving care through specialized mental health services. The increase in emergency room admissions for acute psychological crises—up 10% over the past year—is not merely a medical statistic; it is a sign of a social system struggling to absorb and adapt to a state of permanent instability. The unease surrounding the future is further reflected in antidepressant spending, which has exceeded €419 million, illustrating a nation that often turns to pharmacological solutions in an attempt to soothe the pervasive sense of uncertainty affecting every aspect of daily life.

Between Biology and the Human Spirit: The Face of Fear Across the Stages of Life

Contemporary psychology defines intolerance of uncertainty as a vulnerability factor that spans every stage of life, although its manifestations change profoundly over time. For Generation Z, fear is often linked to performance pressures and the construction of a digital identity in a world perceived as dangerous and lacking guarantees. In this context, anticipatory anxiety becomes a constant companion, projecting catastrophic scenarios long before events actually unfold.

As attention shifts toward adulthood and later life, the focus turns to preserving stability and confronting the fear of losing health or autonomy. Yet the common thread remains a deep longing for certainty. As the Italian composer and pianist Ezio Bosso often suggested, music teaches the importance of listening, implying that uncertainty resembles a necessary dissonant note—one that gives meaning to the eventual resolution of a melody. Likewise, the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche reminds us that doubt is not a sign of weakness but of intellectual honesty, a perspective that allows fear to be integrated as an essential part of the human experience rather than viewed as a flaw in the system.

Beyond the Threshold: Tools for Confronting the Uniqueness of Fear

If uncertainty is an unavoidable condition of human existence, the way our nervous system processes it can be actively shaped through an integrated approach. Polyvagal Theory offers a valuable framework for understanding this process, suggesting that the key to calm lies in the regulation of the vagus nerve—the primary mediator of psychosomatic well-being, responsible for sending signals of safety or alertness to the brain. To address the unique nature of this phenomenon, one can begin at the physiological level through vagal stimulation, using practices such as slow diaphragmatic breathing or singing. These techniques function as a biological switch, helping to deactivate anticipatory anxiety and restore a sense of internal balance.

On the psychological level, an effective approach involves cultivating a willingness to tolerate uncertainty—learning to remain with doubt without the urgent need for immediate answers, a need that often fuels a self-perpetuating cycle of control and worry. This perspective aligns closely with spiritual and meditative practices that anchor individuals in the present moment, diminishing the power of a future that has not yet come into being.

Embracing one’s fear, therefore, does not mean surrendering to it. Rather, it means acknowledging one’s humanity and discovering that within the very cracks of unpredictability lies the possibility of transformation and renewal. In doing so, we learn to face tomorrow not with the expectation of fully knowing it, but with the courage to inhabit it.
