WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND?
Understanding the adolescent brain to be more effective
Why do adolescents stay up late at night and wake up late? Why is their room often messy? Is it normal for them to question everything?
They seem “different” to us because their brain is especially so. Today we know that all these behaviors reflect a very important stage of human brain development that requires our care and attention.
During this fundamental phase the brain changes and renews itself, new connections are formed while others are eliminated, childhood behaviors are left behind to adopt adult behaviors. It is a critical, sensitive, and exciting moment. Therefore, it is a crucial phase for becoming individuals and social human beings.
Understanding this developmental phase in human life allows us to see how certain natural changes in our brain physiology are reflected in what we do and potentially determine the kind of people we will become as adults. It is during this stage of development that, to a large extent, the awareness we have of ourselves and how we relate to others emerges.
Consequently, adolescence is a time of great responsibility for parents, educators, and the entire educational community that supports young people through this growth journey.
Fortunately today, to understand the characteristic behavior of young people in relation to the changes occurring at this stage of development, we have the help of new knowledge from neuroscience.
The study of changes in brain structure and function tells us a lot about why teenagers act the way they do, how the brain’s architecture is linked to behavior, and how brain development, together with hormonal changes and the social environment, influences the person we will become in adulthood.
In this webinar, we will understand “what goes on in adolescents’ minds”, which actions and behaviors to implement to help improve the quality of emotional and educational relationships, and how to grow happily alongside them in our role as educators.
