You can stop being a couple, but you never stop being parents, even when you decide that the best solution is to separate and live in different homes. It is important to remember that it is not the separation itself that can cause trauma, but how the separation is managed (Ferrari, 2015).
Some studies (Francescato, 1994) on this topic highlight the relationship between parents in conflict and children with emotional and behavioral problems. It is interesting to note that whether parents are separated or not has little influence on the children’s psychological well-being; what is instead relevant is the climate of conflict and tension in which the children live, which predicts their level of well-being.
