Brazil counts approximately 206,1 million inhabitants: 7.4% of these live under the national poverty line and 6% in favelas. There are 11 million people that survive in places in which the mortality is really high, insufficient hygienic-sanitary conditions and huge criminality rate.
The number of violent acts in Brazil, especially by and towards minors, are higher than the level described in war struck countries.
New Life for Children operates in the biggest favela of Macaé, at the doors of Rio de Janeiro, in a very degraded socio-cultural context, where a large amount of children are on the street and in such a bad state of poverty that the only way out they find is criminality.
History of the project
In 2013 New Life of Children started a partnership with the NGO Casa do Menor, training more than 60 members of the staff (psychologists, professionals, social workers, educators). The project was finished in 2015.
In 2018 New Life for Children started a training course in Rio das Ostras, involving lawyers, social workers and teachers who are working on the front line with children and adolescents at high risk of social exclusion.
In 2019 New Life for Children started a partnership with the local NGO POSCRIS, which works in the favela Macaé to provide the children with a safe place.
Objectives
Provide the children with a safe place and an alternative to drug dealing, offering solid, educational, individual support.
Organize recreational and sports activities that improve the soft skills of the beneficiaries, such as discipline, self-esteem, and flexibility.
Offer a complete meal a day to all beneficiaries of the POSCRIS center.
Increase the efficacy of the educational intervention by the local staff through continuous education and improving their pedagogical knowledge and practices. .
Results
The beneficiaries of the project distanced themselves from the drug market and improved their school performance.
Through recreational, artistic and sports activities all beneficiaries of the POSCRIS center have improved their transversal skills.
All beneficiaries have received at least one complete meal a day.
The efficacy of the educational intervention by the POSCRIS personnel has increased through continuous education and improvement of their pedagogical knowledge and practices.
