Coping

What coping is

Coping is the ability to face and manage stress, challenges, and life difficulties by implementing a series of behaviors and strategies, which can be divided into two main, combinable categories:

  • Problem-focused coping, which focuses on solving the problem by actively addressing the source of stress with practical and direct solutions. In problem-focused coping, one reflects directly on how to tackle the issue, identifying obstacles and trying to figure out how to overcome them.
  • Emotion-focused coping, which focuses on managing emotions in stressful situations, including temporarily avoiding stress sources and seeking comfort, compensation, and support. Emotion-focused coping can also include meditation techniques that promote relaxation, awareness, and emotional regulation.

Coping strategies

Coping strategies are multiple and can be integrated and combined. Here are some examples:

  • Stepwise approach: breaking down the resolution process into intermediate steps that are more easily manageable.
  • Advance planning: preparing in advance to face stressful situations by deciding on a course of action that reduces anxiety and the sense of losing control.
  • Distraction: finding activities that help take the mind off the source of stress, such as reading, watching movies, listening to music, or engaging in hobbies, to allow a mental break.
  • Emotional regulation: learning to manage emotions through mindfulness practices, meditation, deep breathing, or expressing them constructively and creatively, for example through art or writing.
  • Perspective shift: reconsidering the situation from a different viewpoint, trying to see the positive and constructive side, focusing on what has been learned or how one can grow from the situation.
  • Self-care: engaging in physical activity, following a balanced diet, getting adequate rest, and avoiding harmful substances to maintain well-being.
  • Social support: seeking help and support from others, talking with friends, family, or professionals to gain different perspectives and find emotional comfort.
  • Acceptance: accepting what cannot be changed to facilitate inner peace.
