Nepal is characterized by an extremely high rate of poverty, with one fourth of the population living under the national level of subsistence. Healthcare is lacking: the difficult geography of the country has always limited its availability, especially in rural areas.

The condition of women is especially fragile, in a strictly patriarchal society: they are marked by an inferior status since birth, which hinders girls’ education, forcing them into an inferior social and economic condition, which is renewed every generation. Women have to face violence too often – public and domestic violence is spreading quickly across the country: the incidences of abuse also include polygamy, homicides connected to questions of dowry and maltreatment from members of the family.

Our project in the country aims to support the children of women victims of gender violence, guaranteeing them access to education, health care and nutritional surveillance.

History of the project

In January 2016 New Life for Children started the project “Resilience tutors Nepal”, aimed to train teachers and social workers in the latest pedagogical techniques to help them accompany their students, traumatized by the earthquake, in an empathic way. The project was concluded in January 2017

As a result of the excellent results in Nepal we decided to continue with the “Safer Schools” project, starting the construction of a school building in June 2017 and officially delivering it to the local authorities in June 2018.

Having concluded the “Safer Schools” project, New Life for Children started the project “A hand for Nepal” in January 2019, in collaboration with the Apeiron NGO.
